If you want your move to be successful and stress-free, it is best to be prepared.

One of the most important things to do during the planning stage is to determine what moving supplies and tools you will need. Having the proper supplies will make the daunting task of moving to go more smoothly.

You can probably come up with the most commonly used moving supplies on your own, but when we have a lot on our minds, we can be forgetful. This is why we’ve come up with a comprehensive list of moving supplies to ensure nothing has slipped your mind.

Packing supplies

After you have decided on the moving supplies you need, you may want to find a reputable moving company that offers these supplies. Sometimes, you can receive deals and discounts when using the same company for all of your moving needs.

Boxes

Your most important moving tool, boxes are one of the most commonly bought moving supplies. You will need somewhere to store and organize your belongings. To make packing and lifting them the easiest, it is recommended that you purchase a variety of sizes.

Another thing to keep in mind is the quality of the box. You don’t want something that is going to fall apart with all of your belongings in it. Be sure to get a sturdy, high-quality box.

Packing material

When packing your belongings, there are various types of material you can use to protect them. Bubble wrap and foam sheets are great for breakable items, such as glass, porcelain, and ceramic.

A cheaper alternative may be to use newspapers and linens. However, this isn’t recommended for items that are valuable or sentimental. Newspapers can only offer so much protection.

Packing tape and tape dispenser

Packing tape, shipping tape, and duct tape are the best types of tape to use during your move since they are heavy-duty and reliable.

You don’t want to buy cheap tape and risk your boxes falling apart, so it’s best to stick to name brands and brands sold at your moving company. Instead of trying to save money by buying cheap, thin, unreliable tape, buy good tape in bulk.

Cargo straps or safety straps

These will help your boxes and items from moving around in the back of the truck. You will want your items to be safe and secured. Straps can ensure your boxes stay in place and don’t get damaged.

You can also use these to secure boxes in your own car if there are things that you prefer to transport yourself.

Supplies for furniture and appliances

You might not even think about it, but your larger items, like furniture and appliances, will need supplies to keep them safe too. Though they can’t fit in a box (unless you kept their original packaging), the following are extra supplies to keep your items safe during the move.

Mattress bags

Keeping your mattresses clean during the move is a priority. You sleep on them every night, so the last thing you want is for them to come in contact with any dust, dirt, or water during the move.

Especially the first night in your new home, you’ll want a good night’s sleep on your own bed. Make sure to ask your moving company about protection for your mattress and the rest of your bed.

Furniture pads and couch covers

Furniture pads will keep your furniture safe from scratches and other unattractive marks it could get during the move. While a blanket or sheet could offer some surface protection, they have no padding, so they wouldn’t protect from gouges.

Couch covers help your furniture stay safe and clean from stains, dust, soil, and water. They are a more significant investment than having to buy a new furniture set.

Flat- screen T.V. cover

If you have a flat- screen television, you should consider buying a screen cover to protect from cracks and impacts. Televisions are expensive and can be damaged easily. Make sure that you use straps as well, to keep the television upright during the move.

Toolset

Some of your furniture may need to be taken apart for an easier move. This is when a toolset would come in handy. If you already have one, make sure you don’t accidentally pack it with your other belongings. You will need it when you reach your new home as well, to put your furniture back together.

Hand trucks and dollies

For large and heavy boxes or pieces of furniture, you should be using a dolly to transport these on and off the moving truck, and into your new home. The last thing you want during your move is an injury from lifting something too big.

Cleaning supplies

These will be helpful at both your old home and new, so be sure to pack these in an easy-to-reach spot for easy accessibility.

Broom and dustpan

These will be used to sweep your old home before leaving it for the last time and for your new home. During and after unpacking, you will want to sweep up any of that dirt that entered your home during the moving process.

Vacuum

If your old or new home has carpeting, these will want to be cleaned last. It will make your old house look better to potential buyers and keep the dirt and germs from traveling from room to room in your new home.

Paper towels

Paper towels are a quick and efficient way to wipe up spills or use antibacterial sprays or multi-surface cleaners. Moves can be messy and you’ll want to leave your old place in the best shape you can.

Multi-purpose cleaner and glass cleaner

Cleaners are a must-have when moving. You will want everything to look clean at your old home and be able to easily clean up the new home on moving day.

Garbage bags

You may go through quite a few trash bags during your move. They are good for throwing away items you don’t want anymore, storing items you would like to donate, and catching any garbage before entering your new home.

Bucket, mop, and sponges

A bucket can be used for mopping the floors in your old and new home, as well as deep cleaning. You can reach some of the most difficult spots and areas that a mop won’t reach with your sponge.

Disinfectant sprays and wipes

With COVID-19 being a threat, it is wise to disinfectant your new home before moving into it. Remembering to wipe down doorknobs, light switches, and other commonly touched areas in a home can save you from a trip to the doctor.
